God Meets Us in the Darkness

Scripture: Psalm 34:18 "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit."

Reflection: One of the cruelest lies depression tells us is that we are alone.

Depression has a way of making us feel disconnected from everyone around us. Even when we're surrounded by family, friends, coworkers, or people at church, we can still feel unseen and isolated. The darkness can become so overwhelming that God's presence feels distant.

But the Bible tells a different story. In the Old Testament, Psalm 34:18 does not say that God is close only to those who have it all together. It doesn't say He draws near only to those who are strong, joyful, confident, or spiritually thriving. It says He is close to the brokenhearted. I have sat with parents, soldiers, spouses and individuals who felt forgotten. What stood out to me during those conversations was that even when they could not recognize God's hand in the moment, they could see His faithfulness when they looked back.

That means God does not move away from us when we are hurting. He moves toward us. Throughout Scripture, we see this over and over again. God met Hagar when she felt abandoned in the wilderness. He found Elijah exhausted and discouraged under a broom tree. He listened to David's cries in seasons of deep despair. He restored Peter after failure and shame.

God has always been drawn to those who are hurting.

Perhaps one of the hardest parts of depression is that it can numb our emotions. We may know the truth about God in our minds, yet feel completely disconnected from Him in our hearts.

Maybe you've had days when:

  • Prayer felt impossible.

  • Worship felt empty.

  • Your Bible stayed closed.

  • Getting out of bed felt like a major accomplishment.

If so, you're not alone.

And more importantly, God has not left you.

The reality of God's presence is not determined by the strength of your emotions. His presence is grounded in His character. He remains faithful whether you feel Him or not. Sometimes God is doing His deepest work in the hidden places. Just as roots grow underground long before fruit appears on a tree, God may be strengthening your faith in ways you cannot yet see.

Today, remember this:

God's love is not measured by how strongly you feel Him. God's love is measured by His faithfulness.

And His faithfulness has never failed.

Mental Health Insight: One of the most common symptoms of depression is social withdrawal. When people are hurting, they often pull away from others, cancel plans, stop answering messages, and isolate themselves.

Unfortunately, isolation tends to make depression worse. Studies have consistently shown that healthy connection is one of the strongest protective factors against depression and emotional distress.

This aligns with God's design. We were created for relationship—with Him and with one another. When depression tells you to isolate, choosing connection can become an act of courage and healing.

Connection doesn't have to be overwhelming. It may look like:

  • Replying to a text message.

  • Calling a trusted friend.

  • Attending church.

  • Joining a small group.

  • Asking someone to pray with you.

Small steps toward connection can make a meaningful difference.

Today's Practice

  • Write down one way depression has made you feel alone.

  • Underneath it, write this truth:

"God is close to me, even when I cannot feel Him."

  • Reach out to one trusted person today, even if it's only a short text message.

Prayer: Father, sometimes depression makes me feel invisible, disconnected, and alone. There are moments when Your presence feels far away, even though I know You are near. Thank You for reminding me through Your Word that You are close to the brokenhearted. Help me trust what is true, even when my feelings tell me otherwise. Give me the courage to reach out for support and the strength to take everyday one step at a time. Thank You for never abandoning me. Thank You for staying with me in the darkness. Remind me today that I am loved, seen, valued, and held securely in Your hands.
